The retina from a physicist perspective
Seminars of the Institut de Physique de Nice,
Abstract:
The retina is the entrance of the visual system. The flux of photons coming from the external world is converted by the retina into action potentials sent via the optic nerve and deciphered by the visual cortex in a very efficient way.
In this talk I will briefly sketch a few physical principles ruling the retina dynamics. I will then give several examples where the retinal network, in response to non stationary inputs, produces interesting dynamical patterns allowing to better understand why the retina is so efficient in encoding dynamical visual features.
